I found this button at a construction site, here in Michigan, and I was told that it was sometimes bought by privates in civil war to decorate their uniforms with.  they bought them from traveling suttler's.  If this is not true, post here so I will know the truth.  The site used to be part of the underground railroad, and clothing was exchanged and burned in the farm house trash pits. Many other neat things have been found here also, now there is a Walgreen's, Gordon Food Service and Steak n Shake on the site.[:'(].
