    Lexington trip

Thanks to the generosity of Trace, a bunch of us took a trip to the Corley Mill site to see what we could muster up. Although the clearing is in the early stages some managed to pull some flat buttons, Shield nickle, and a eagle buton.  I had a great time hanging out with other club members and hopefully we can do it again soon.

    Re: Lexington trip

Thanks to Trace for the opportunity to hunt at one of his sites. Lot of land to cover and boy was it hot out there yesterday!!. Managed to get a flat button and some miscellaneous junk before the heat drove me back to my car to enjoy the air conditioning.

Stopped at another site as I was going home and found a 1906 Barber dime. Any day you find silver is a good day.

     Thanks Trace and Jeff K.

    Re: Lexington trip

Hey guys, sorry I had to miss the trip to Lexington, but I had to take care of the wife this weekend.  It was her time to go on a trip.  You know it is really hard to go to Charleston and not get to hunt, but boy did I do some shopping.

Even though there was not much found at Trace's site, I sure would have liked to be there with you.  Maybe we can get another group together this coming Saturday or Sunday and go back.  By that time they may have some of the litter on the ground removed.  If anybody is interested in doing this, post on the forum or give me a call at 803-831-8102.

Thanks to Trace for giving up a good spot.  I guess this hunt will quallify as a club outing.

Until we can get together again just keep on diggin!!!

    Re: Lexington trip

A little bit more info on Trace's club hunt trip to Lexington. While trying to recover a target in some hard ground I failed to see the Yellowjacket nest next to me with the little Shi% heads formulating a plan of attack. Before I knew it on of them stung me in the left hand and I was hauling butt like a run away semi, but not before one more got me on the other hand. Angry I let Scott Bradley know I got stung and that it was stinging pretty harsh, Bad move. Scott says to me you know what will take the sting away? and before I knew it I had a glob of wet chewing tobacco sliding off my hand. The first question I wanted to ask was hey how did you get that wet so fast? then I saw the bulge under his lip. Indifferent This was one of those moments in my life when i felt like a kid and my friend spit on the palm of my hand telling me that that was my swimming pool, I am sure some of you remember the joke. All kidding aside it did help take the sting away, thanks Scott. BUT since I am allergic to bees and I decided to ignore the stings (hey whats a little swelling right?) i woke up to a pumkin size hand and had to head to the doctors office to get a shot of cortisone and was put on antibiotics. Sad

Gas $10, Breakfast $6, Water to drink $5, Trip to the doctors $367, Hunting with friends, Priceless. For everything else there is Mastercard.

    Re: Yellow Jacket Dance

Did you do the dance Jeff?  You know how it goes - you wave your arms madly around your head and run in place in tight little circles while screaming.

You need to get an Epi-pen if you are allergic!!!  I can tell you, it could have been much worse for you.  Bill and I were huntin' in the Low Country a few years ago, and I felt something nail me on the arm.  Now, I was sure it was just another pesky snake bite, so I hollered to Bill that I thought I just got snake bit... about 3 seconds later I noticed the "brown fog" swirling around me, and then I noticed the hole I was standing in... which seemed to be the source of the buzzing cloud.

I did the "yellow jacket dance" (on top of their nest), dropped my metal detector (on top of their nest), and ran hollering out of the woods... the little devils followed me all the way back to the truck stinging me the whole way.  I kept asking for Bill to help me - you know, swat the ones that were on my back, unlock the truck so I could hide from them - something like that.  But nooooo, he was falling all over himself laughing.  I thought he was going to pass out for lack of oxygen.  Oddly, I didn't see the humor in it that Bill saw.

We had to leave, drive to town for a box of Benadryl and a can of Wasp Spray (so I could retrieve my metal detector from on top of the nest).  I'm not allergic to bee stings, but I got so many, I was opening the benadryl and popping them like pez as I stood at the checkout line (experiencing a bit of difficulty breathing at that moment)!  My point is, if I had been allergic to them, I would probably not have made it to the store to buy Benadryl - let alone out of the woods.

    Some advice:

    1) Get an Epi-pen, dude... this may have been your "warning sting".

    2) Don't dance or drop your metal detector on top of the nest - that really gets their dander up.

    3) Don't consume 6 or 8 Benadryls at one time - it makes you kind of "loopy".  I carry 4 with me in my snake-bite kit, now.

    4) If your buddy won't swat the yellow jackets on your back, you can smack your back against the tailgate of his truck to smash them.

    5) Don't let Scott spit tobacco on you anymore - that's just nasty and you don't have to take that from him.

    6) "Stop, Drop and Roll" only works if you are on fire.  It does not work with yellow jackets - it only excites them all the more.

    7) If you start popping pills while muttering something about "yellow jackets" and "brown fog" while standing in line at the Piggly Wiggly, the manager will ask you to leave and not come back into his store.

    Dig-it!

More stinging critters than relics Re: Yellow Jacket Dance

It seems that more stinging insects were found at the hunt on Saturday than the number of relics that were found. I won't disclose the whole story but Donnie Brazzell has a humorous story to tell about his encounter with a hornet's nest at the Lexington hunt site. Donnie will need to tell his story at the next meeting.

Surprisingly I managed to stay away from the little stinging critters and I have also been chigger-free for close to a year now -- knock on wood!!

Thanks to Trace for the location and to Jeff K. for the lead down there.   Had a great time and hope we can get there again before it's all gone forever.  Shaler

    Re: Yellow Jacket Dance

Hey, that story that Chris told is funny now but when it happened it wasn't too funny.  At first I found it rather amusing but then I realized that I didn't know if Chris was allergic to bees or not. By the time that I got that thought and figured out that I had better see if he was or not, he was ,oh I don't know, about a mile from the jacket nest still dancing.  I finally got to him and did manage to kill a few of the little devils that were under his shirt.  It really gave me a scare because he got stung so many times.  Although he did get a little sick, fortunately he made it through the rest of the day. So pay attention to what he says about taking precautions if you are allergic to those stings.

Oh  buy the way that can of wasp spray took care of that nest and Chris got his revenge.
