    Looking for Opinions

My name is Harold, I live close to Charleston.  Did a lot of diggin in younger years and want to start again.  I have only used a Garrett detector.  Does anyone have a Garrett GTI2500 they can tell me about or a Whie Spectra v3? They both appear to be top of the line by their respective manufacturers.  I know and like the bell tone of the Garrett but have never seen a White being worked.  Thanks for any input you may offer.

    Machine Types

    Harold,

Here are a few notes on these machines.

The Garrett is a great machine for Coin Shooting.  The bell tone does work very nicely, but this is not a relic machine.  I have owned one and the depth is just not that impressive.  Now on a coin up to 6".....this one is deadly.  But to dig bullets, buttons, items other than just coins......not my first choice.

The Whites V3 is a different type of machine.  I have not owned one, but I am hearing good things.  This machine has a wider range of ability.  It will come with a higher learning curve, but once mastered you would probably be more happy this this one.

You should consider what type of hunting you plan on doing.  Todays detectors are really aimed at certain applications.  Coin Shooting (Garrett) Water (Mine Lab) -  Relics (Whites, Fisher)  etc etc.

Considering that in either case, you are going to be spending a fairly large amount of money, consider what we plan on doing with this machine.

I have actually become quite attached to the Fisher F75.  I find this to have superior depth on coins, relics, etc., but it does seems to have a bit of trouble properly ID'ing in mineralized soil.

If you have some specific questions, just post them here.  The folks on this forum would be more than happy to assist.

    Good Luck!  RickB(SC)

    Re: Looking for Opinions

Rick hit the nail on the head with this one. For my first year and a half of detecting I used the Garrett Ace 250 and had grown quite fond of the bell tones, but as my experience grew with the machine, I noticed I was not picking up the deeper items and signals that my fellow  Th'rs were. So I decided to get the Whites XLT (with much help to our members only club raffle) and off I went. I immediately started noticing that I was picking up items (Relics) a little better and a little deeper than I had with the Garrett. Long story short for a better relic machine go with the Whites. Hope this helps

    Re: Looking for Opinions

Harold, Living where you do, you are in a great place to do any kind of hunting you prefer, whether it is hunting for coins or relics. I live in the upstate, but I hunt frequently in the low country. I used a White's XLT as my primary machine for a number of years.  My machine of choice is now the Fisher F75, but the XLT is still my backup machine as it works in a lot of places that the Fisher will not.

We have several members in our club that now own the new White's V3.  Most of who have not owned them long enough to really know them, but most report that they think this is going to be their best machine ever.  I'm with Rick B concerning the Garrett machine as a coin machine.  I used an ADS 7 for about 11 years and found more than my share of coins with it.  The bad thing about the belltone is it spoils you, or at least it did me .  I know that I left many, many good targets in the ground through the years because they did not have a belltone sound.  So for relics I personally do not reccomend the Garrett.

In case you didn't know it, there is a new metal detecting club in Moncks Corner.  It would be well worth your time to check them out.  Their president is also the President of the southeast chapter of the FMDAC.  His name is Art DePhilipio.  I don't know his phone number but if you would like it just respond on this forum and I'm sure someone will get it to you.

If You would like to get together sometime and do some hunting in your neck of the woods, I would gladly let you use my XLT to see if you like it. My Email is wylie.bill@yahoo.com   Just drop me a line and we can make plans.

I'm glad you found our forum and hope to hear from you again.
